Having fun with the Kids at Home

A Mom’s Perspective
Part 3 of 3: Teenagers
Author: Kalinda Patton - June 8, 2020

Are your teens starting to get restless? Have they picked up all the trophies they could in Fortnite? Have they tried all the Tik Tok challenges? Or are you simply looking to find a way to entertain them that doesn’t require a screen, or to spend time as a family? Whatever your motivations, they are all great reasons to discover a new game with your teens!

This article is the last one in a series of three, divided by age group. You can find the first article, Preschool Age, HERE; as well as the second article, School Age, HERE.

Corinth
Days of Wonder
8+

Corinth is a fun little dice game that appears quite simple, but is filled with strategic options. Your kids will have to be resourceful to benefit from the unpredictability of their dice rolls.

During each turn, the dice are rolled and grouped by number, from lowest to highest, on the central game board. The location where the dice are placed on the board will determine what options are available for the round. Players choose the dice from an available space and perform the corresponding action on their personal board. Complete a series, purchase a building, gain victory points, there are tons of options available—it all depends on what gets rolled!

With gameplay lasting about 20 minutes, it’s possible to play multiple games in a row—and thus reduce screen time! This small, compact game can even be played OUTSIDE! (It’s fun to dream, right?) Personally, I put in a little extra time by laminating a few personal board sheets and using dry-erase markers to play; this way a lot less paper
gets wasted!

Unlock!
Space Cowboys
10+

The Unlock! Series of games gives you the same feeling as the popular Escape Rooms; you know those places where they lock you in a room and you must search for clues to get out? Well, with Unlock! You can enjoy the same experience from the comfort of your couch. Each box contains three different scenarios that you must resolve within a given time limit. Your teens will have to work together to find the clues and make sense of them before time runs out.

The Unlock! series includes 6 titles (with a 7th releasing shortly) that each includes
3 scenarios, lasting around 60 minutes. Each box includes different themes, so you’ll be sure to find at least one that everyone will love. It’s important to note that a free app is required to play. You’ll need to app to validate the codes you find or to get extra clues. It also offers a thematic soundtrack and keeps track of how much time you have left.

KeyForge
Fantasy Flight Games
14+

The KeyForge series is sure to be a hit with your teens! With a look inspired by video games, monsters and a slew of weird characters, fantastically illustrated on the cards, this game screams, “Hey teens! Come play!”

KeyForge is a combat card game created by the same person as the VERY popular Magic: The Gathering. Two players face each other to be the first to forge three keys. Different creatures will come into play in order to harm your opponent, to defend yourself from enemy attacks, or to forge your keys. The basic rules fit on
two double-sided sheets, so players can rapidly understand the fundamentals and get their game on!

The KeyForge product line includes three base games (Call of the Archons; Age of Ascension and Worlds Collide) and a multitude of individual decks that you can add to your game once you’ve purchased one of the base games. Each deck is unique and will offer a different gameplay experience!

Marvel Champions: The Card Game
Fantasy Flight Games
14+

Are your kids fans of superheroes like Spiderman, Captain Marvel, and the Avengers? Well, then Marvel Champions: The Card Game is surely for them!

In this cooperative game, everyone works together against the game, and players embody their favourite superheroes as they try to defeat super-villains from the Marvel universe. With the perfect combination of cooperation and the use of different card combinations, maybe, just maybe, your teens will be the victors of this epic battle!

The Marvel Champions: The Card Game product line includes a variety of products that can be added to the base game. New heroes, new villains, new scenarios; there is an entire universe to discover!

Well, this concludes my selection of games to entertain your teenagers (and who knows, maybe you as well!) This also concludes the series of “Having fun with the kids” articles. I hope that these articles will help you discover a game, or many games for you and your family to enjoy. At the end of the day, spending quality time as a family is all that counts!
Stay safe, Keep Calm, and Game On!
